One of the first buildings constructed in the winter of 1829 by the first permanent settlers to Matagorda was a log cabin with a dirt floor for a schoolhouse. Providing a quality education has always been important to the citizens of Matagorda.

The current school was built in 1970 and has undergone a major renovation focusing on academics, early childhood development, wellness & fitness, and technology. Laura Shay is the superintendent of MISD and can be reached at: (979) 863-7693

Any time, day or night, the volunteers of the Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) selflessly respond to grass or structure fires and emergency medical needs. Their state-of-the-art ambulance is equipped with advanced cardiac life support capabilities. Be sure to support their fundraisers; the Memorial Day barbeque and the October fish fry.

The Matagorda Branch Library is a descendant of the first free library in Matagorda County in 1912 that was created by the Woman's Club. Today it continues to serve the community with over 7500 items in the Matagorda branch and access to over 65,000 in the total system. The Library also provides public access to the internet, fax machines copy machines and videos.
